Amelia Hong has been in financial services since the subprime crisis in 2008 making her a rare breed where most people would have run away from a financial meltdown. She has been recognised year after year for her efforts in this field. Out of the 10 years, she has been a Licensed Financial Planner for 5 years where helping clients holistically became crucial to their financial wellbeing.
Amelia started her literary life scribbling thoughts into her diary, mostly as a way to cope during the time when her mother was fatally ill. She studied Economics at the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia). She started her career by peering into computer screens for live commodities prices, moving on to developing consumer goods under a subsidiary of Berjaya Group, restructuring mortgages in Citibank for defaulting clients to being a buyer at Metrojaya before making a foray to Diethelm Keller Siber Hegner dealing with consumer goods. At the height of the economic boom, she left to pursue her MBA at the University of Nottingham.
In the workforce again during the subprime crisis with a large global bank where she encouraged people to spend and get into debt, Amelia realised ironically that she preferred to be on the other side of the fence where she can help people save and invest instead. Realising that there was an opportunity in the global gloom to pursue a career in Financial Planning, she went right ahead. Many thought she was crazy. Being a careful investor herself, she found the work fulfilling and is now a Licensed Financial Planner*. She was a regular contributor in the StarBiz Financial Snacks column and has been on air with BFM and Capital FM.
Amelia is a co-author of the book Financial Snacks: Practical Bites For Money Matters. This book is suitable for those who find the topic of day-to-day finance a little dry. A compilation of 52 articles with a cartoon attached to each topic provides a rare combination of finance and humour which makes the ‘snacks’ easy to swallow.
Amelia is also the author of the book In/Outcome: Manage Your Income, Achieve Great Financial Outcome. In/Outcome is perfect for those who are starting out in working life or those who are starting the personal finance journey and want to learn how to manage their money in a practical and effective way. Those who are quite advanced would also glean some knowledge to boost the speed of this journey.
For one year, Amelia was also the President of the Financially Empowered Women’s Club which emphasis was on empowering women to make better decisions about their money and to take charge of their finances beyond the traditional daily budgeting. From here, she was given the platform by The Star to address in a full-house talk about issues that women traditionally faced in dealing with finances. She has also conducted many talks to bring financial literacy to companies and to associations.
Amelia’s family background was where she learnt financial good sense. Having a fatally ill mother meant that her father had to work 3 jobs to be able to support the family and the building medical bills. Seeing the struggle that her father went through gave her resolve to learn how to utilise money wisely to make lemons in to lemonade.
In her spare time, Amelia dotes on her feline companions, paints her heritage Peranakan artefacts on canvas and champions the usage of Bahasa Malaysia in her home.
Amelia truly believes that having clearly defined financial aims will help change the way you deal with your income which greatly impacts your financial outcome.
